ADEC completed the research work to build a bicycle network design tool to model regional bike networks. The Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI) at San Jose State University funded this research where three researchers, Dr. Peter Furth (Northeastern University), Dr. Hilary Nixon (San Jose State University) and Dr. Maaza Mekuria (ADEC) conducted the research. Maaza was the principal investigator in the research effort to build a network model. The completed model analyzed some effective bicycle network improvements showing how to improve network level connectivity to the metro-San Jose bicycle infrastructure. The research provides network level metrics that help the analyst improve general and trip based connectivity. A bicycle network classification scheme has been developed with particular focus from the bike user's perspective by incorporating a classification system based traffic stress. It can also be used to rank different networks or improvement schemes. The model uses data that is readily available making it simpler to apply to different regions.
